Thursday 24th October – Bike **** Briare le Canal - Cloudy

We got up before it got light and were ready for a bike ride before 9 o’clock. We were determined to get it in before the final leg of our journey north. We set off along the canal bank near the van which meets a lock before turning left to go through another lock to meet the main canal which is a lot higher and eventually meets the aquaduct. The point where the two canals meet was really pretty and we stopped for a couple of photos:) When we got to the end of the main canal ready to cross the aquaduct we were amazed to see that they had shut the gates at either end of the bridge and drained all the water from the channel! We were quite fascinated by this and pleased we had come to see it in such an unusual state until we noticed all the poor old fish flapping in the bottom!! There was a few inches of water left in the bottom but where the different sections join it was too shallow for the bigger fish to flip over. Some of them were really big – a roach about a foot long! We were very sad about the fish and thought there would have been somebody there from the environment agency to supervise and help the fish. We felt like volunteering to get in and help them over the obstacles! When we got to the other end of the bridge there was a Coypu (Ragadon in French) crouched against the wall in a little alcove! Poor old thing it was very beautiful and we love them but everyone else seems to hate them so I expect he will get bumped off even though there is enough fish in there to keep him going for life!! I suppose the only thing is that the fish will go to feed various birds and the Coypu – the crows and rooks were already having a feast. We cycled to the next bridge and back along the other side and down onto the banks of the Loire itself. This path brings you to another lock on a different canal. We looped back round until we arrived back at the van, had a cuppa and left about 11. The journey to Calais went very well and we got to Escalles – our overnight stop at about 6.15. We stopped at a Super U on the way and got a few bits and pieces to take home for the boys.
